Celebrity Golf Tournament

Celebrity Golf Tournament

3 weeks ago I was invited to a Celebrity golf tournament in Fresno, which was a charity fundraiser. I play golf about once or twice a year, but I had to learn how to actually play a little golf. So with two weeks to practice I went golfing every chance I got.

I always enjoy going home to Fresno to visit the family and the stomping grounds. It was a beautiful weekend with the occasional thunderstorm moving through. It was a bit muggy and on the hot side, but still didn’t slow us down at all on the Golf course. I played a full 18 hole 3 days in a row.

The first day I was teamed up with John Lee, the country singer and claim to fame “Looking for Love in all the wrong places”. Johnny is not just an incredible singer, but a full on comedian too! By the end of the first day my cheeks hurt from laughing all day.  From Johnny giving my Mom a hard time to his loud red Zebra pants it was non stop laughs. The way Golf should be!

The second day I was teamed up with Chuck Finely, professional baseball pitcher for the Angels. I am pretty sure they teamed him up with me because he is   6’ 6” and I was definitely the shortest golfer there. So he looked like a Giant next to me. But damn could he send that little white ball flying. There was 5 of us on that team and it was the boys team. The other three was the Table Mountain Casino crew, which consisted of BMX riders and snowboarders. It Was the BOYS TEAM. Willie, Eli and Waylon represented well and helped out team knock down some killer birdies.

The format was a scramble, which I learned makes for a really fun relaxing weekend. You take the best ball out of all 5 players every hit. So I could mess up right and left and it was no big deal. I still contributed to some hits so I was happy. Both days my team ended up 8 under. Lots of spectators showed up and supported all the golfers. Kids were pumped to get autographs from all the celebs. I gave  away a snowboard from Porters snowboard shop to a girl that claims to sit in the same seat I sat in at Teneya middle school in Mrs. Owensbe’s class. Kinda ironic. The highlight for me was getting an autograph from Lee Trivino with the quote, “Grizzly Adams did have a beard”. You know what that’s from right?

    Andy,

Like many others who have found your blog through seeing your (and Tommy's) inspiring effort with the amazing race - I thought it would be appropriate to congratulate you with an extremely successful race in many senses (yes - and the Mustangs!!!). I have been tracking you guys on the race (from Australia) - and I (like many others racing!) noticed that there was something completely different about you two! Your Christ-like attitudes and values truly shined and amplified on to so many more, particularly when sharing your faith and even sharing verses from the Bible on your bags. You guys truly used every opportunity not to only enjoy God's creation - but to serve in God's name, expanding the Kingdom - the greatest prize and destination!

I was also reading along your Blog, with your story about your father and mother. I am sorry to hear the past events that have occurred but also glad to see God at work and using this situation like no other! This is a magnificent testament to many others! My mother did have breast cancer at the beginning of 2002 when I was 6. Over the years she deteriorated - however she was able to use her story to teach others about Jesus - even at the pathology! At the end of last year - she passed away to be with God in heaven! It is entirely encouraging to see you guys proclaim God's name into this world as brothers in Christ. I would also like to encourage you as you face new challenges in life - and to hold firmly to God - as He is the key!

Praying for you and your family, wife and mum and dad!

    God Bless,
    Ben Lean
